Centers

Centers

Beginning around October, children begin working in learning centers on a daily basis.    The learning centers adopted by the Woodview Kindergarten are based on the work of Karen L. Loman and Dorthy P. Hall.  Our learning centers are designated areas within the classroom where children explore, construct, and play with materials.  We select the materials and design activities with specific outcomes based on the Wisconsin Model Academic Standards.  We selected this approach because it allows us to integrate different areas of the curriculum simultaneously, the children to become more self-directed, and allows the teacher more time to work with small groups and/or individual students.

During Center time, the students work in small groups of 2-4 students.  The students in these groups change approximately once per trimester.  The students rotate with their group and remain together throughout the entire Center time.

Our centers work on a four day rotation cycle.  On the first day, the students will learn about all 10 center activites, and then cycle through one center.  On the second day, the students cycle through their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th centers.  On the third day, the students cycle through their 5th, 6th, and 7th centers.  On the fourth day, the students cycle through their 8th, 9th, and 10th centers. At the end of the fourth day, every child will have rotated through all 10 centers.  Each center rotation lasts approximately 20 minutes.  This process is illustrated by the chart below.  The children use this chart to help them navigate the rotation cycle.  These chart pictures correspond with the centers below.  Have your child show you which rotation group he/she belongs to.  Let them describe to you what they do in each center.
